SPUC Northern Ireland have launched a high profile campaign in a bid to repeal the abortion laws imposed by Westminster. Liam Gibson, SPUC Northern Ireland Political Officer said: “Our campaign aims to build public support for the repeal of section 9 and for the legal recognition that all unborn children share an equal right to life, regardless of the stage of their development, the state of their health or the circumstances of their conception.”
The campaign, which was launched today, features a series of high-profile billboard adverts that are displayed across the region of Northern Ireland. A digital initiative has also been launched which is urging the Northern Irish people to sign a petition, telling the Stormont Assembly to repeal Section 9 of the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation) Act.
“Sign the petition and join the fight”
Mr Gibson said: “Last year MPs from England, Scotland and Wales treated the devolution settlement with complete contempt. They ignored parliamentary procedures and constitutional conventions in an effort to force a radical abortion regime on the people of Northern Ireland.
“In a shocking abuse of power they voted to overturn our law which had saved 100,000 babies from abortion since 1967. The regulations now being introduced by the Secretary of State lack all legitimacy.
“They should be rejected outright and section 9 of the Executive Formation Act, which has no mandate from the people of Northern Ireland, should be repealed.
“The right to life is the fundamental human right. We are calling on everyone who believes in the inviolability of human life to sign the petition today and join the fight to protect the most innocent and vulnerable members of our community.”
The most radical abortion regime in Europe
SPUC Northern Ireland’s campaign has been launched just days after SPUC called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to intervene to halt the implementation of a radical new law introducing abortion on demand to Northern Ireland which the Minister of State, Robin Walker, placed before Parliament, last week.Among the litany of egregious measures the Government will introduce is the killing of unborn children up to 12 weeks gestation on demand without exception and even up to birth in certain circumstances.
Mr Gibson added: “The responsibility for imposing this legislation lies squarely with 10 Downing Street. Boris Johnson has the power to stop this now and return authority for abortion law to the people of Northern Ireland and the Stormont Assembly and we’re calling on him to do that.”
