The House of Representatives in Paraguay has held a minute of silence for the unborn “that will die” as a result of Argentina’s vote to legalise abortion.
The minute of silence was requested by Paraguayan Congressman Raúl Latorre.
“I ask for a minute of silence for the thousands of lives of Argentinian brothers and sisters who are going to be lost, even before they are born, based on the recent decision made by the Senate of the neighbouring country”, said Latorre.
On 30 December, the Argentine Senate voted to approve a bill allowing abortion up to the 14th week and allow termination at any point if the woman has been raped or if her life is in danger has been passed.
The passage of the bill, approved by the country’s lower house earlier in December, as reported by SPUC, was met with large-scale protests by pro-life Argentines throughout the notion.
In October, the proposed legislation was condemned by Argentine Catholic bishops as “untenable”.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “As Basilio Núñez, a Paraguayan congressman, has said: ‘what has happened in Argentina is a tragedy’.
“However, it is heartening to see that Paraguayan congressmen and women are prepared, still, to stand for the pro-life cause and recognise the tragedy that has just occurred on the other side of their border.”
