In medical terms, the word abortion is used to describe any event that results in the death of an unborn child, modified by whether the abortion is induced or spontaneous. In day-to-day speech, the word abortion is most commonly used to talk about acts that deliberately end the life of a child in the womb, usually by means of surgery or medication; this is how the word is used on this website.

There have been over 8.4 million abortions in the UK since the floodgates were opened to legal abortion in 1967, even though the legality of the vast majority of abortions  .
