The Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) Bill, introduced by Gillian MacKay MSP, is in its final stages and will be debated and voted on Wednesday 12th June.

This Bill is a direct attack on civil rights guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights. It also removes a lifeline for women who want to keep their baby but feel they have no other choice than abortion.

What will happen if this Bill is passed?

  • It will be illegal to:
      1. 'Influence the decision of another person to access, provide or facilitate the provision of abortion services at the protected premises.' This would prevent women being offered help outside clinics.
      2. To cause 'distress to another person in connection with the other person's decision to access, provide or facilitate the provision of abortion services at the protected premises.’ This would prevent peaceful, prayerful vigils from being able to take place.
  • Anyone taking part in a pro-life vigil in Scotland would be subject to:
      1. on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum (which is £10,000).
      2. on conviction on indictment, to an unlimited fine.

Write to your MSPs

We need a colossal push to persuade MSPs to vote against this draconian and regressive legislation.

Please contact your MSPs now. To help you do this, we have provided a tool which enables you to write to all eight of your MSPs at once.

The tool brings up an example template letter – please edit this to explain in your own words why your MSPs should vote against buffer zones.

How to do this:

  1. Enter your postcode. This will bring up who your MSPs are, together with an editable email template.
  2. Edit the email template to explain in your own words why you oppose this bill. This could include your own experience of taking part in pro-life vigils, or any stories you have of women being helped by them.
  3. Press Submit. Your email will be automatically sent to all eight of your MSPs.”
