UN officials promote "right to abortion" at Human Rights Council.
SPUC is appealing to church leaders and pro-life groups worldwide to oppose an extreme, "ideologically driven" pro-abortion report produced by the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights. The report was introduced to the Human Rights Court last week in a one-sided debate, from which SPUC, the only pro-life group present, were excluded from making an intervention. The report was based on the World Health Organisation statistics, which have been shown to be wildly inaccurate; and, once prepared, the report was carefully handled to sidestep any possibility of the flawed statistics being exposed or criticized in a resolution, thus undermining the report's credibility. It's not possible to practise IVF and respect human life, says John Smeaton.
John Smeaton, national director of SPUC, has said that it is impossible to practise IVF and respect human life. Mr Smeaton's comments follow a recent stream of negative reports on IVF in the mainstream media. The most recent of these was a study published this week that found that babies born thanks to IVF treatment are more likely to have birth defects such as heart problems. Mr Smeaton said that amidst all the challenges faced by the pro-life movement, we must continue to work openly and courageously for a ban on all IVF procedures.[John Smeaton, 17 June] http://bit.ly/cAeRMg
Significant increase in Dutch euthanasia deaths.
The 2009 Netherlands euthanasia statistics show that the number of euthanasia deaths in the Netherlands has significantly increased on a yearly basis for several years. The most recent report stated that there were 2636 reported euthanasia deaths, a 13% increase over the 2008 statistics and a 45% increase since 2003. Alexander Schadenberg, of the Euthanasia Prevention Coaliton, noted that the statistics do not even account for all cases of euthanasia as the Netherlands has separate catagories for assisted suicide and deaths without explicit request or consent. Mr Schadenberg said that reality is that euthanasia is out of control in the Netherlands. [Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, 16 June] http://bit.ly/cBnXLv
