News,

US children conceived using anonymous sperm donations are using a new website to locate their half-siblings, Bioedge reports. Some 30,000 children are born from donated sperm every year, with sperm banks often unclear as to how many children are fathered by the same donor. Opponents of anonymous sperm donation warn of the risk of incest between half-siblings who are not aware that they are biologically related. [Bioedge, 22 November] A UN researcher has warned that there are 200 million 'missing' women worldwide because of infanticide and sex selective abortion. Theodor Winkler told a UN press conference: "We are confronted with the slaughter of Eve, a systematic gendercide of tragic proportions." He added. "It starts in the womb. There are societies where male births are preferred, particularly if the number of births are limited. That's where abortion for gender reasons starts." [AlertNet, 18 November] The parents of a 14-year-old girl who died of blood clots after using the birth control patch are to sue the manufacturer. Alycia Brown's parents are hoping to have the patch taken off the market. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, 17 women have died as a result of using the patch since it was introduced in 2002. [LifeSiteNews, 21 November]
