Maternal mortality: moves at UN to promote abortion as human right

Dear supporter,

A right to abortion, under the guise of reproductive health, will be proposed at a United Nations (UN) summit in New York between 20 and 22 September 2010. The summit will discuss the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). MDG number five is “improve maternal health.” The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Secretary General issued a report in December 2009 about maternal health. The report claims that access to abortion is necessary to save mothers’ lives and health. The report’s claims will be used to promote abortion at the September 2010 summit.

Please contact strongly pro-life politicians in your country and ask them to:

  • contact the most relevant government officials in your country about the September 2010 summit in New York on the MDGs
  • object to those officials about attempts made at the UN to promote abortion under the guise of reproductive health
  • urge your government to reject the report on maternal health by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Secretary General.

Here are some facts and pro-life arguments you may wish to share with strongly pro-life politicians in your country when contacting them:

  • maternal death rates are unacceptably high, but lowering them can and should be achieved without killing unborn babies
  • evidence suggests that the best way to achieve better maternal health is by improving access to healthcare (e.g. antibiotics, drugs to prevent haemorrhage, blood transfusions, clean facilities, properly trained health professionals)
  • access to legal abortion in countries where abortion is currently illegal does not save women’s lives and may lead to an overall increase in maternal deaths
  • legal access to abortion conflicts with nations’ obligations under international law to uphold the right to life http://www.amnestyforbabies.com
  • upholding the rights of women and of their unborn children is a consistent and complementary approach to dealing with existing weaknesses in health care systems.
