SPUC is urging voters in Northern Ireland to only support candidates who are committed to protecting all unborn children equally.
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children entered the Northern Ireland election arena this week.
The Society announced announced a series of public meetings and the publication of an election leaflet which encourages supporters to use tactical voting at the ballot box on March 2.
The initiative secured significant publicity in the most prominent newspapers - the News Letter and the Belfast Telegraph - and SPUC's presence in the campaign has stimulated widespread debate in advance of the crucially important poll.
SPUC has identified three key battlegrounds - Fermanagh and South Tyrone, and South Antrim and West Belfast - and is encouraging its supporters to vote tactically and only support candidates who are committed to protecting all unborn children equally.
"Automatically disqualified"
SPUC's NI development officer Liam Gibson said: "The right to life of unborn babies has always cut across the political and religious divide in Northern Ireland. Any candidate who wants to legalise the killing of unborn children on the basis of their disabilities or the circumstances of their conception should be considered to be automatically disqualified regardless of where they stand on other issues."
Another key constituency for pro-life tactical voting, Mr Gibson said, was in South Antrim, where former Alliance leader David Ford, who introduced a Private Member's Bill seeking to legalise abortion in cases of 'fatal foetal abnormality', is standing for re-election and plans to launch a new Bill if re-elected. Pro-life supporters are being asked to find alternative candidates to back who support the pro-life movement.
In West Belfast pro-life voters are being urged not to support Sinn Fein due to their support for abortion.
Vote only for pro-life candidates
Mr Gibson said:
"On 2 March we are urging people to vote only for pro-life candidates. Even a second, third or fourth preference vote can help the pro-abortionists.
"The NHS, education, jobs, the economy - they’re all important. But for unborn babies, Polling Day is much more than that. For them, it’s a matter of life or death. And don't forget, every abortion has two victims. One dead. One wounded."
He added: "With the media now highlighting the importance of the issue supporters must make their views known and voices heard as this is a key election issue. We want all our backers to send letters to the newspapers as soon as possible. Your views and votes will help shaped the future makeup of Stormont."
