Award winners with Sir James MacMillan, Dr Michael Ross and SPUC Scotland staff.
Last weekend, Saturday 6th May 2017, SPUC Scotland hosted the Scottish Pro-Life Awards Dinner.
The event honoured eight key individuals who have been building a civilisation of love in their respective fields and thus working towards a Culture of Life. It was hosted by the Rev. Dr Michael Ross and the awards were presented by internationally acclaimed composer, Sir James MacMillian, with 170 people in attendance.
Explaining the motivation for the event, SPUC Scotland's Director of Communications and Campaigns Micheal J Robinson said: "This year, 2017 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Abortion Act 1967. Since the Act was passed more than 9 million unborn children have been killed and countless mothers and fathers have been hurt by abortion. We wanted to recognise this, and also recognise those who have fought tirelessly both to save babies and help people find healing."
Powerful witnesses
The Healer of Broken Hearts Award went to Margaret Cuthill, who founded the Abortion Recovery Care and Helpline. Sir James said: "This award winner embodies compassion and understanding and has allowed many, many people to find the courage and strength to continue with their lives in peace and reconciliation with their lost child."
Other award winners included Sr Roseann Reddy, a Witness of the Gospel of Life, and the Project Truth Team, for Building a Culture of Life. One of the most emotional moments of the evening was when Connie Wood and Mary Doogan won the Witness to Conscience Award. Connie and Mary worked as midwives in Glasgow before being forced to take their fight not to be involved in abortion all the way to the Supreme Court.

John Deighan, the Chief Executive of SPUC Scotland, said: "It was an emotional and inspiring evening celebrating the witness of so many who have fought for the weakest members of society. Standing up for the humanity of the unborn child and promoting the human right to life is the number one issue facing Scotland today. We thought it was important that our society hears more about the heroic work done by individuals over the last 50 years to promote the dignity of every human life and overcome the tragedy of abortion."
