The statement spoke of the inherent dignity of all adults and children with Down's syndome.
The president said that discrimination against people with Down's syndrome should not be tolerated.
?The White House has released a statement from President Trump on Down Syndrome Awareness month, which celebrates "the significant contributions that people with Down syndrome make to their families, to their communities, and to our Nation."
No excuse to discard human life
The statement appears to strongly condemn the eugenic abortion of babies with Down's syndrome, saying:
Sadly, there remain too many people - both in the United States and throughout the world - that still see Down syndrome as an excuse to ignore or discard human life. This sentiment is and will always be tragically misguided. We must always be vigilant in defending and promoting the unique and special gifts of all citizens in need. We should not tolerate any discrimination against them, as all people have inherent dignity.
The abortion rate for Down's syndrome diagnosis is somewhat lower in America than in much of Europe, at 67% (the UK is about 90%). A CBSN report highlighting the fact that nearly100% of babies with the condition in Iceland are aborted caused shock in America and around the world.
Inherent dignity
The president in the message also promised to "renew our Nation’s strong commitment to promoting the health, well-being, and inherent dignity of all children and adults with Down syndrome." Significantly, he recognised that many parents are given misleading information on Down's syndrome, including that their children will suffer, saying, "we will also continue to increase public awareness regarding the true nature of this condition, and to dispel the stubborn myths about the degree to which it is disabling."
