Euthanasia bill defeated in South Australia

Speaker Michael Atkinson cast the deciding vote to defeat the bill

A bid to legalise euthanasia in South Australia has been defeated- by a single vote.

The "Death with Dignity" bill was the fifteenth attempt to change the law at South Australia's state parliament, but only the second time debate had reached such an advanced stage. MPs spent five hours debating the legislation, finally holding a vote at around 4am.

MPs were given a conscience vote and were evenly divided 23 in support and 23 in favour, meaning Speaker Michael Atkinson cast the deciding vote to defeat the bill.

Attempts to censor pro-life students gain media attention

Pro-life societies in universities have been making the news in recent days.

Yesterday, the student paper The Tab reported that a petition has been started seeking to ban Liverpool Pro-Life Society. This has been picked up by the Huffington Post, and Heat Street, which has run with the headline University Feminists Demand Ban for Pro-Life Society Before It Even Starts.

Attempts to censor the pro-life student voice at other universities have also been reported, with Brietbart saying that Pro-Life Students are under ‘constant attack’ at British Universities. There is some good news, however, as the Tab reports that an attempt to ban Newcastle Life Society has been defeated.
