The bill is expected to be defeated in the Republican-controlled House
Last week, Democrats in the US House of Representatives introduced a bill to expand insurance coverage of abortions.
Democrat Barbara Lee sponsored the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance Woman Act of 2015. The bill seeks to ensure funding for abortions for poorer women. These proposals would effectively dismantle the Hyde Amendment of 1967, which prevents the federal funding of abortion except in cases of rape or incest. The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) has praised Barbara Lee's bill". [Latin Post, 11 July]
Director of the Population Research Institute Steve Mosher, commented: "The pro-life majority in the U.S. House of Representatives resoundingly defeated a previous Lee amendment which would have funded abortion research in violation of the Hyde Amendment. The House defeated the Lee amendment by a vote of 176-245 with all Republicans and 5 Democrats voting against the amendment. This other effort by Congresswoman Lee to fund abortions for all women will be defeated by the same margin. The pro-life majority in the House reflects the pro-life majority of the American people".
