Church of Scotland minister opposes plans for opt-out organ donation system in Scotland

"This is no consent at all and a donation on this basis is not a donation but something akin to a tax imposed by the state."

Reverend Dr Donald MacDonald, of the Free Church of Scotland, has commented on plans to introduce an opt-out organ donation system in Scotland.

He objected to the plans saying: "This is no consent at all and a donation on this basis is not a donation but something akin to a tax imposed by the state."

Last year, SPUC opposed the Welsh government's Human Transplantation (Wales) Act which was eventually passed after a flawed consultation process.  [Buchan Observer, 29 September]

Janet Thomas, of SPUC's No Less Human (NLH), who led the campaign against the Welsh organ donation bill said: "We opposed the Human Transplantation Act in Wales for the same reason that this bill must be opposed: because presumed consent is no consent."
