India most dangerous place in world for girl children, suggests new figures

A report by the United Nations suggests that India is the most dangerous place in the world for girl children.

Figures by the UN's Department of Economic and Social Affairs suggest that from 2000 to 2010 there were 56 deaths of boys aged one to five for every 100 female deaths.

Campaigners cite sex-selective abortion, infanticide and deliberate neglect as part of the phenomenon. [Telegraph, 1 February]
