A study to be published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood journal has revealed that girls as young as 10 are being prescribed the birth control pill by doctors.

The British Medical Association advises that the pill can be given out to girls at any age if they are considered mature enough.

However, Professor Peter Helms, a co-author of the report said: "You just wonder about the circumstances of the sexual relationships they are having. Are their sexual partners older adults? Is there an offence being committed? There is the possibility of sexual abuse going on, but this is the only information we can get."

In Scotland, sex with a girl under the age of 13 is classified as statutory rape.

[The Scottish Herald, 9 May ] A pro-euthanasia group in the UK is helping terminally ill people to fund trips to the Dignitas suicide clinic in Switzerland, the Telegraph has revealed.

The Last Choice was set up recently by Dr Michael Irwin, a former chairman of the Voluntary Euthanasia Society.

In a leaked email, Dr Irwin wrote: "A small organising committee has been formed, [but] apart from myself, the membership of this will remain a secret for the present because we suppose we are breaking English law."

He told an undercover reporter that his organisation could give advice, funding and an escort for a suicide trip and explained how to lie to a GP to obtain the necessary medical records.

[The Telegraph, 8 May ] At a Mass celebrated at the Basilica of St John Lateran, Pope Benedict XVI spoke of John Paul II as having 'underlined in an unequivocal way the inviolability of the human being, the inviolability of human life, from its conception until natural death'.

Pope Benedict said: "The freedom to kill is not true freedom, but a tyranny that reduces the human being to slavery." His homily was repeatedly interrupted by applause.

[Zenit, 8 May ] Campaigners in Ireland are to complain to the Vatican about a Church-run pregnancy counselling service that is distributing leaflets containing the contact details of pro-abortion organisations.

Cura receives 600,000 euros of funding from the Crisis Pregnancy Agency every year and is distributing their Positive Options leaflets which contain the contact details of the Irish Family Planning Association and the Well Woman Centre, both of which supply the contact details of abortion facilities.

[The Times of London, 8 May ] Pat Buckley of European Life Network commented: "Handing out the details of abortion providers is the price of having the financial support of the Crisis Pregnancy Agency.

It is contrary to Catholic teaching and the Catholic bishops should step in and ensure that this practice stops immediately." Terri Schiavo's father has dismissed claims that her death following the removal of her feeding tube was peaceful, giving a harrowing account of her final hours.

"She was struggling to breathe. The inside of her mouth looked like a piece of meat in a meat market," he said during an interview. "It was reddish maroon because her mouth was dry and her lips were cracking from the lack of hydration. This cannot happen again. If anyone would have witnessed it, they would have been so appalled that they would never allow it to happen again."

[The Telegraph, 8 May ] Malta's Justice and Home Affairs Minister has announced government plans to endorse pro-life laws in the country's Constitution.

The move has already received support from some sections of society, including the Opposition Deputy Marie Louise Coleiro and the Archbishop of Malta. [di-ve, 9 May ]
