Alzheimer’s Society
The Alzheimer's Society is a care and research charity for people with dementia and their relatives.
This charity is a member of the AMRC.
Although the society does not, at present, fund research using embryonic stem cells, in an email to SPUC, a spokesperson for the charity stated that: "[the] Alzheimer's Society has no policy against using embryos for research in the future. Alzheimer's Society funds research which is of scientific value and quality and is considered a high priority by our Research Network of people affected by dementia. Therefore, we are not able to say that we would definitely not fund research using embryos in the future." (4/11/2014).
They state, however, that "The wishes of any donor wanting to support research that does not involve embryonic stem cells will be fully respected." The Dementia Guide provides information on advanced directives, including making 'advance decisions to refuse treatment'.
