SPUC Safe at School opposes Caroline Lucas's statutory sex education bill

Ms Lucas is attempting to override parents' wishes on sex education

London, : SPUC Safe at School, a national parents' advocacy group, opposes the attempt by Caroline Lucas, the Green MP, to make sex education a statutory school subject.

The group says that Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PHSE), which includes sex education, must remain non-compulsory, allowing parents to protect their children from unacceptable and inappropriate sex education.

Antonia Tully, national co-ordinator of Safe at School, said: "Parents are the best people to talk to their children about sexuality. We must not allow the state to take over this role. Parents know their children best and can judge when they are ready to hear about sexual matters.

"And parents must be helped, rather than being supplanted by schools, to keep their children safe from sexual exploitation."

Safe at School is a campaign of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC).
