? : A founder of a notorious activist group which has staged topless protests to promote abortion has now disowned the group and rejects abortion.
Sara Giromin (also known as Sara Winter), formerly one of the leaders of the FEMEN group in Brazil, has said that she "made a huge mistake" and "ask[s] forgiveness from the bottom of her heart" for being involved in the group.
Fiorella Nash, who speaks on pro-life feminism for the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC), commented:
"Sara is to be commended for the great courage she has shown in speaking publicly about her change of heart. She has exposed the dirty tactics of FEMEN, which perpetuates ugly misogynist stereotypes whilst claiming to believe in equality. Sara is right to blame the aggressive promotion of abortion in Brazil on NGOs funded by rich men.
"Exceptionally brave and honest"
"Abortion was exposed as evidence of women's oppression over a hundred years ago, yet radical feminists continue to perpetuate the lie that abortion helps women. Sara’s decision publicly to apologise to those she has hurt will not have been taken lightly. She is clearly an exceptionally brave and honest woman to stand up to such a corrupt movement, knowing how she will be attacked."
