Premature baby study welcome but isn't guide to abortion law reform, says SPUC

Premature baby study welcome but isn't guide to abortion law reform, says SPUC London, 1st February 2008 - The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) has commented on a newly published study by Professor John Wyatt of University College London into the survival rates of premature babies.

Anthony Ozimic, SPUC spokesman, said: "We welcome scientific advances in saving both prematurely-born babies and unborn children, not least because the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child says that children need special care and protection both before and after birth. From a political perspective, it is important to note that the viability of unborn children should not be used as a guide for reforming the law on abortion, because all unborn children should be given equal protection against abortion."
