Adult stem cell breakthrough exposes embryo research as redundant, says SPUC
Adult stem cell breakthrough exposes embryo research as redundant, says SPUC Westminster, 20th November 2007 - Today's reports that Japanese and American scientists have developed highly promising stem cells without using embryos has been welcomed by British pro-life group the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC).
Anthony Ozimic, SPUC political secretary, commented: "These truly remarkable results in the rapidly-advancing field of adult stem cell research show that one can be both pro-life and pro-science. Experimenting with embryos, on the other hand, is both bad ethics and bad science. Science advances when it respects human life, but stalls or even goes backwards when it treats human beings as mere research material. "Adult stem cell research is already providing benefits for patients in scores of different medical conditions, whereas over two decades of embryo experimentation has produced little if anything of research value, let alone anything of value for patients. "The government's embryo bill promotes the redundant science of destructive embryo research and therefore the House of Lords should vote against the bill when the bill is debated again tomorrow", concluded Mr Ozimic.
