Conference to address new threats to life

Conference to address new threats to life Westminster, 4 September, 2000--A major pro-life conference is to be held at the Hayes Conference Centre in Swanwick, Derbyshire, on 15 - 17 September. Leading national and international experts will speak on such topics as euthanasia, post-abortion syndrome, the status of the early human embryo, handicap, human cloning and the morning-after pill. The event is the annual national conference of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC). Speakers will include such prominent and well-known figures as Peter Garrett (research and education director of Life, as well as founder and director of the Movement Against The Cloning of Humans), Dr Tony Cole (consultant paediatrician and chairman of the Medical Ethics Alliance, among other roles) and Dr Anthony Fisher (a leading bioethicist and president of SPUC). Paul Tully, general secretary of SPUC, said: "33 years after the passing of the Abortion Act, the United Kingdom is threatened with further anti-life legislation on human cloning and euthanasia which may cost as many lives as the Abortion Act 1967. Our conference will be examining those threats and looking, in workshops and plenary sessions, at how we can meet the challenges ahead." Established in January 1967 to campaign against the Abortion Act passed later that year, SPUC is the longest established pro-life group in the United Kingdom. Since the passing of the Act more than five million unborn children have been killed by abortion in the UK alone and the Act has served as a model for many other countries. The conference will begin at 4 pm on Friday 15 September, and conclude after lunch at 1 pm on Sunday 17 September. The fully inclusive price for adults is £120, or £102 for students in full-time education and £60 for children aged five to 12.
