“How to get an abortion if you’re a teen”- Teen Vogue targets teenage girls for abortion

The magazine encourages teens to 'sidestep rules' regarding parental consent

A popular teen magazine has been instructing teenage girls on how to undergo abortions without the consent of their parents.

Teen Vogue Magazine has recently run a series on social media platform, Snapchat, and an advice column entitled: "How to get an abortion if you’re a teen." Aimed at an audience of young teenage girls, the magazine’s USA abortion series positively promotes abortion and encourages the young readers to "sidestep rules" regarding parental consent to abortion.

Exploiting vulnerable teenagers

Teen Vogue writer, Nona Willis Aronowitz, composed the original article, which was written in response to a letter penned by a vulnerable teenage girl, seeking advice about a crisis pregnancy.

The letter from the un-named teen wrote: "I'm 16, I'm pregnant, and I don't want to be. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to get an abortion without my parents' permission, but I'm really scared to tell them because they are both against abortion. What should I do?"

In response, Aronowitz then appeared to push a personal abortion agenda and exploit the pregnant teens vulnerability, as she provided explicit advice on the American states that would perform abortions on teenage girls without parental consent.

Aronowitz told the teen: "I’m here to tell you that you have nothing to be ashamed of. Accidents can happen even to the most careful among us. And it’s only logical that if teens are mature enough to become parents, to decide whether or not they want to give birth. Having access to abortion should be your right, regardless of your parents’ beliefs."

She continued: "So let’s talk logistics: Your first step is knowing your state’s rules when it comes to parental consent (though there are ways to sidestep those rules depending on what state you're in — more on that later). If you live in one of the handful of states in which a minor can get an abortion without parental involvement — and if you don’t want to tell your parents — you’re all set…There is a legal option in 36 states that would let you get an abortion without parental approval."

Institutional secrecy

The abortion industry is one which is shrouded in secrecy and successfully shuts parents out regarding their children’s health. Currently in the United Kingdom, any child under the age of consent can undergo an abortion without parental consent or knowledge. The UK Family Planning Organisation (FPA) advises those under the age of 16 that "you do not have to tell your parents" and that they can undergo an abortion without the "knowledge or agreement" of parents or partners.

Shockingly, the findings of a Care Quality Commission report, investigating UK abortion giant, Marie Stopes, found that the Maidstone, Kent clinic had been performing abortions on children under the age of 16. The report stated: "In the period January- April 2016, across all MSI clinics, 230 children less than 16 years of age were seen but no safeguarding referrals were made. Thirteen children under 16 years of age were treated at the Maidstone clinic."

Inspectors raised concerns that staff were obtaining consent from children without proper qualifications, and counselling was often done over the phone, with the counsellor having no way of knowing they were speaking to a child. Clinic staff also explicitly discouraged parental involvement, the report said. One told inspectors: "The trouble is parents might not react as you think and might be disappointed" and "Parents get upset, we don’t involve them."

Parents must provide a positive culture for their daughters

Antonia Tully of SPUC and the mother of two daughters said: "Protecting our daughters from the horror of abortion starts with us, their parents. Have we created an atmosphere in the family where a frightened, pregnant teenage daughter can come to us? We are likely to be the only ones who will offer real care. Everyone else, online and off, will be pointing to an abortion clinic."

Ms Tully continued: "A loving parent in a crisis teenage pregnancy is the difference between life and death for the baby. The abortion industry thrives on lies and secrecy. Our daughters deserve the truth and all our love."
