MPs appeared determined to prioritise abortion over democracy
During an eruptive debate last night in the House of Commons, pro-abortion MPs appeared furious at the prospect of abortion provisions contained in the Northern Ireland Executive Formation Act, being rendered void.
Yesterday evening, the House of Commons debated the motion that ‘this House has considered the Report pursuant to…the Northern Ireland Executive formation Act 2019’.
SPUC said that pro-abortion MPs were prioritising the killing of unborn children over the democratic rights of the devolved province.
Promotion of death, destruction of democracy in Parliament
Live Tweeting from the House of Commons, pro-abortion MP Stella Creasy, made clear her intentions to prioritise abortion over democracy.
Creasy said: "Now in parliament to try to find out why all of a sudden the government is trying to get Northern Ireland Assembly up and running and using the possibility of stopping equal abortion access in Northern Ireland as a bargaining chip".
Other pro-abortion MPs expressed their distaste for religious bodies in Northern Ireland being consulted over the abortion regime to be implemented in their home region.
Jess Phillips MP, who spoke candidly of her aborted child, stated: "Had I had the child that I aborted, my son Danny would not be walking around today".
John Smeaton, the chief executive of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC), commented: "Pro-abortion MPs seem prepared to go to any length, and to use any argument, to prioritise the necessity of imposing the killing unborn children on Northern Ireland over devolution and democracy".
Defending life, protecting democracy in Parliament
A number of MPs spoke unflinchingly in defence of the human rights of the unborn and the democratic principle of devolution.
DUP MP Jim Shannon said: "The hon. Lady can sneer, smile and laugh, but the figures are on record: 100,000 children live today because we do not have the abortion legislation that there is on the mainland.
"When I think about what will be imposed on my part of the United Kingdom from Tuesday, I am left utterly speechless. Between and 31 March 2020, the only law on this that will be in place in Northern Ireland will be the Criminal Justice Act (Northern Ireland) 1945, which is not engaged until the point at which a child is capable of being born alive.
"That effectively means that we would have a legal void in terms of protections for the unborn until at least 21 weeks of gestation, and potentially up to 28 weeks’ gestation. It means that from Tuesday some unborn animals subject to research will have more statutory protection in Northern Ireland than some unborn human beings. It is absolutely unbelievable that anyone would do this, and the Members responsible need to look at themselves very seriously. It is deeply troubling.
"I say again that the majority of people in my constituency are very clear that they do not want liberalised abortion in Strangford or across Northern Ireland. It would be better if the Northern Ireland Assembly made that decision, and I hope that the recall on Monday will be a way forward."
Conservative MP Maria Caulfield went on to describe how the majority of Northern Irish public oppose the Westminster abortion regime.
Ms Caulfield: "This is a case not just of dismissing devolution but of pretending to speak on behalf of the women of Northern Ireland. In the Belfast Telegraph just a few days ago, polling showed that across every age group and gender, people in Northern Ireland were against changes in the rules on abortion. Some 54% of 18 to 24-year-olds and 51% of women are against the changes proposed."
Looking forward
An intensive phase of talks aiming to restore power-sharing at Stormont will take place today and Friday.
The talks will be the last opportunity for local parties to reach an agreement before Tuesday, October 22nd, when the Westminster imposition of a radical abortion regime on Northern Ireland will come into effect.
