A Labour MP is attempting to exploit the Coronavirus crisis in a bid to further the pro-abortion agenda in Northern Ireland. Labour MP Diana Johnson called the disruption to abortion procedures a "lost opportunity."
Speaking at the House of Commons, pro-abortion Labour MP Diana Johnson commented on how the Coronavirus crisis is disrupting the abortion regime which was due to be fully imposed on the people of Northern Ireland by the end of March 2020.
Abortion was decriminalised in Northern Ireland during October 2019, however the regime is not expected to come into full force until March 31st 2020.
The Coronavirus crisis has affected this agenda, as the recent collapse of the airline Flybe has thwarted the plans of Northern Irish women who would have been travelling to the UK for abortions.
Johnson said: "Of course, abortion was decriminalised in October 2019 and we now see the lost opportunity of this medical procedure not being provided over the last six months in Northern Ireland. The failure to do that means that we are now in a much more difficult position with covid-19. Has the Minister given any more thought to what other action he could take to ensure that services are available to women in Northern Ireland?"
Repeal and Abolish
Philip Lynn, SPUC Northern Ireland Development officer said: "Like the Coronavirus, abortion targets the most vulnerable in society. At a time when our health service is stretched to capacity, Diana Johnson should be focusing her efforts on the provision of genuine healthcare that saves lives."
SPUC has been urging pro-life groups and supporters to resist any compromise regarding the Northern Irish abortion law which is expected to come into force by March 31st 2020.
Mr Lynn added: "The rights of the people of Northern Ireland to properly resourced healthcare should be protected, and the devolution settlement respected: Westminster’s abortion legislation within Section 9 must be repealed immediately."
Since the passing of the UK 1967 Abortion Act, Northern Ireland has been the only region of the United Kingdom which has resisted the abortion law. As a result of this, more than 100,000 Northern Irish people are alive today.
