Pro-lifers have been urged by Bishop John Sherrington to ask their MP to vote against proposed amendments to the Domestic Abuse Bill including an amendment to decriminalise abortion. Antonia Tully, SPUC Director of Campaigns said: "On Monday 6 July 2020 MPs could change the course of abortion history in our country. If amendments to the Domestic Abuse Bill are passed, we will see the worst evil in our country since the passing of the 1967 Abortion Act.”
Two new clauses have been tabled to the Domestic Abuse Bill which is due to be debated on July 6.
New Clause 28 seeks to make home abortions legal for domestic abuse victims and New Clause 29 seeks to repeal sections 58 and 59 of the Offences Against the Person Act. This would remove abortion from the criminal law.
“I ask people to write to their MP”
Alongside SPUC, Bishop Sherrington of the Diocese of Westminster is calling on pro-lifers to contact their MP, asking them to vote against these amendments.
Bishop Sherrington said: “There is currently an attempt by some MPs to table an amendment to the Bill to repeal sections 58 and 59 of the Offences Against the Persons Act 1861.
“It would result in the introduction of abortion on demand, for any reason, up until when a child is capable of being born alive, with a ceiling of 28 weeks.
“This amendment would also have the effect of removing the clauses in the Abortion Act 1967 which enable medical practitioners to exercise conscientious objection in relation to abortion. Furthermore, it would also remove the legal safeguards which currently protect women and children.
“It is not too late to act. I ask people to write to their MP urging them to oppose these amendments which would liberalise abortion.”
Now is the time for pro-lifers to cry out for justice for the unborn and mothers”
SPUC’s Antonia Tully said: “It is great to hear faith leaders calling on Christians to take action. Thank you Bishop John Sherrington.
"Let's also remember the wonderful words of Bishop Philip Egan who a few weeks ago made a heartfelt plea to Christians on Guernsey to resist an extreme abortion regime there. Bishop Egan said: 'Every child conceived in the womb is God-given. Every child is willed personally by God. Every child is placed on earth by God for a purpose...' Sadly politicians on Guernsey voted to decriminalise abortion.
"Now is the time for all pro-lifers of faith to cry out to God to bring justice for unborn children and their mothers on Monday 6 July 2020."
