SNP member asks councillor “who will look after your kids” in “anti-life anti-woman” question

An SNP councillor was subjected to “anti-life and anti-woman” prejudice after an SNP member asked her how she plans to look after her children if she was elected to Holyrood.

Councillor Julie McKenzie, who represents Oban North and Lorn, received the question from an unnamed SNP member who said: “Julie, I think you would be a great MSP, however, I have to ask, if you get elected who will look after your kids?”

Ms McKenzie, who is trying to become her party’s candidate for Argyll and Bute, responded to the question by asking if they had ever posed the same question to a male candidate.

SPUC has been reporting on the “anti-woman anti-life” sentiment which appears to be festering within the SNP party.

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “Whilst the question posed to Ms McKenzie is unacceptable, it is sadly not surprising. For years now anti-woman and anti-life sentiments appear to be solidifying within the SNP party. This prejudice now even seems to be contaminating SNP members.

“So many women are pushed towards abortion after being routinely told that they are incapable of maintaining successful careers whilst caring for a child. No woman should be forced to choose between her child or career. Women can do both. The prejudice faced by Ms McKenzie has no place in 2020.

“It is vital that we support and empower women. We wish Ms McKenzie the best of luck in her career.”
