SPUC supporters across Britain marked the anniversary of the 1967 Abortion Act by holding pro-life chains across the country. The pro-life chains took place on Saturday 24 October, and pro-lifers stood in silence to remember the 9.5 million unborn children who have been killed by abortion in Britain since 1967.
John Deighan, SPUC Deputy Chief Executive said: “Today marks fifty-three years since the passing of the Abortion Act on 27 October 1967. Since then, more than nine and a half million babies have lost their lives to abortion. Countless mothers have suffered.
“Despite the restrictions in place at this time, SPUC members up and down the country have been holding pro-life chains to mark the passing of the Abortion Act. The public has seen pro-life chains in Dundee, Plymouth, Middlesbrough, Northampton, Reading, Altrincham, Salisbury, Ashton under Lyne and Peterborough to name but some.
“I want to thank you, our supporters, who have courageously and constantly taken part in these and other pro-life activities. Your dedication and commitment in this last year has been incredible.”

“The worst expansion in abortion in 50 years”
Mr Deighan continued: “2020 has seen the worst expansion in abortion practise in 50 years, with the DIY abortion scheme introduced at the beginning of lockdown.”
DIY home abortion was implemented in response to the nationwide lockdown caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. Under the DIY abortion scheme, women can get abortion drugs following a phone or video call, without a face to face consultation with a medical professional. The abortion pills are then sent through the post and women perform their own abortion at home with no medical supervision or support.
Mr Deighan said: “It is a tragic irony that this is exposing women to precisely the dangers which abortion rights campaigners in the 60s claimed to want to protect them from. Ending self-induced or ‘backstreet’ abortions was one of the arguments used in support of the Abortion Act. But now abortion providers are celebrating that the Government has allowed them to send women abortion pills in the post, so that they can self-induce abortions at home.”
“We will continue to stand up for unborn babies and their mothers”
Mr Deighan added: “The challenges we face are very great. But we know what we have science, and the truth, on our side. The pro-life position is very simple. Life begins at conception, and every human life is valuable and worthy of protection. We will continue to proclaim these facts, and to stand up for unborn babies and their mothers.”
