Pro-life Catholic Amy Coney Barrett confirmed to U.S. Supreme Court

Amy Coney Barrett, 48, was confirmed and sworn in as a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court last night following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Justice Barrett was President Trump’s nomination pick and might swing a future vote in the Court to repeal Roe vs. Wade, which legalised abortion in the United States in 1973.

The latest appointment to the Supreme Court is a Catholic mother of seven who is reported to be pro-life.

Barrett already faced anti-life bias as a Catholic, having stated in 2013 that “life begins at conception”. During her confirmation to the position of judge on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2017, Democrats attempted to use her pro-life faith to thwart her appointment.

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “Although this confirmation will not necessarily guarantee the repeal of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, President Trump has now nominated, and had confirmed, three justices whose votes will surely matter in any future decision on abortion cases or legislation in the Supreme Court, the highest court in the United States.

“The President must be given some credit for these appointments, which underscore a presidency that is defiantly and meaningfully pro-life.”
