Premature awareness day reminds us “every life has value, no matter how small” says SPUC

SPUC has said that Prematurity Awareness Day, reminds us that “every human life has value, no matter how small or vulnerable.”

Prematurity Awareness Day is recognized on November 17th. The day aims to raise awareness towards premature birth and how this effects families around the world.

In the United Kingdom, an average of 60,000 babies are born prematurely each year. Premature birth is the leading cause of death for children under five years old.

In recognition of Prematurity Awareness Day, and as a heartwarming gesture of thanks to all those who care from premature babies, Gloucester Cathedral has illuminated purple.

SPUC comment

An SPUC spokesperson said: “1 in 13 babies in our country are born prematurely each year. Whilst many babies born prematurely thrive and defy the odds against them, premature births can have a devastating impact on others.

“Prematurity Awareness Day allows us to raise awareness towards the constant hurdles that millions of families and babies face. During 2020, we have seen an outpour of beautiful gestures towards premature babies and their families. Even the smallest gesture towards those families and babies struggling, affirms society’s care and compassion towards them.

“Each human life should be valued and cherished, not matter how small or vulnerable."
