Emmerdale is expected to depict post-abortion trauma in upcoming episodes which SPUC says is the “grim reality for many women following an abortion.”
In recent months, the ITV soap provoked outrage and was accused of promoting eugenic abortion after a main character, Laurel, aborted her baby because of a diagnosis of Down’s syndrome.
Emmerdale is now set to follow Laurel’s life after her abortion. Viewers have seen Laurel, who has isolated herself following the abortion, struggle to return to work and regain a normal life.
Upcoming episodes are expected to show the post-abortive character, who is a recovering alcoholic, relapse and struggle with substance abuse.
“Abortion can be life-changing”
Michael Robinson, SPUC Director of Communications said: “Abortion can have a life-changing impact on the lives of many women.
“Evidence-based review, “Abortion and Women’s Health”, lists a catalogue of physical and mental health problems linked to abortion which include substance abuse, significant grief, anxiety, depression and even an increased risk of suicide.
“Despite many women enduring such suffering, publicity surrounding abortion often ignores the possibility of distress or trauma.
“We can hope that these upcoming episodes will raise awareness about the reality of abortion and the ordeal that many women face.”
The impact that abortion has upon the health of some women can be life-changing.
