New Mexico repeals protections for healthcare workers who do not wish to participate in abortions

Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has signed a new bill into law in New Mexico that repeals protections for healthcare workers who do not want to participate in abortions. SPUC has described the bill as an "intolerant and vindictive attempt to deny decent Americans the right not to participate in the killing of the unborn."

The legal protection in the U.S. state of New Mexico stipulated that a healthcare worker who “objects to the justified medical termination on moral or religious grounds shall not be required to participate in medical procedures which will result in the termination of pregnancy”.

Last Friday, Governor Grisham removed that protection. It is now predicted that many pro-life workers within the field of medicine will be forced to leave the state as a result.

“It leaves no choice to our doctors”, said Republican state Senator Crystal Diamond, dubbing the legislation a “no-choice” bill.

The bill was passed 40-30 by the state House, and 25-17 by the state Senate. Both legislative bodies are controlled by the Democrats.

The legislation, which also overturned the state’s unenforced 1969 abortion ban, follows a similar bill filed in California that, if passed, would force doctors to facilitate and be complicit in the assisted suicide of willing patients.

"A bigoted bill"

Michael Robinson, SPUC Director of Communications said: “Evidently emboldened by President Biden’s election victory last November, pro-abortion Democratic legislators are advancing ever more extreme bills, which include the stripping away of the rights of pro-lifers.

“Not simply content with persecuting the unborn, anti-life, anti-conscience extremists in the USA are doing their utmost to make life intolerable for men and women who refuse to participate in abortions, as well as in assisted dying cases.

“This bigoted bill has set out to persecute pro-lifers. Supposedly predicated on ‘choice’, we can now see these ‘pro-choice’ politicians for what they really are. They are engaging in nothing other than an intolerant and vindictive attempt to deny decent Americans the right not to participate in the killing of the unborn.”
