Culture of Life 1972, otherwise known as COL1972, is “the only trademarked fashion brand that supports a culture of life”, says founder Carla D’Addesi.
Founded in 2019, COL1972, the U.S. clothing and jewellery brand, was created as a pro-life alternative to pro-abortion brands and the “1973” Roe vs. Wade-themed necklace worn by celebrities, including actresses Selena Gomez, Debra Messing and Olivia Munn.
The “1973” necklace, by Sophie Ratner, was released in partnership with the Physicians for Reproductive Health to celebrate the legalisation of abortion in the USA in 1973. 30% of the proceeds from each necklace were donated to the pro-abortion organisation.
D’Addesi’s fashion brand, “a fashion movement that protects and values human life”, was therefore “birthed out of necessity”, says D’Addesi, who “discovered that there were over 70 brands that gave back to a culture of death”.
The designer was speaking on the podcast of pro-life advocate Abby Johnson.
“They’re hanging this tombstone of 60 million children around their necks”, said D’Addesi, referring to the “1973” necklace.
Launching her own “1972” necklace, marking the final year before the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to legalise abortion, D’Addesi’s pro-life brand COL1972 – “a fashion brand with a big, big ministry” – aims to support pro-life causes.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “It is vital that, in building a culture of life, pro-life advocates use every means available to them to spread the message that the unborn matter.
“Not only is COL1972 pushing back against a fashion industry and celebrity culture that celebrate abortion, but it is also providing pro-lifers with a badge of honour that publicly declares that the death of 60 million unborn babies in the U.S. is unacceptable.
“You can also purchase a ‘Tiny Feet’ badge here – a life-size replica of feet belonging to an unborn child 10 weeks from conception. It has become the internationally recognised symbol of the pro-life movement, worn by millions.”
