“We have to be prepared, battle-ready”, says Sister Deirdre Byrne, speaking at an international pro-life conference in the USA. “Every day, things seem to be ramping up about things that are against the family and faith.”
Sister Byrne, of the Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, is a retired army colonel and surgeon, now working at a pro-life medical clinic in Washington, D.C.
On 30 April, Sister Byrne spoke at the 50th annual conference of the pro-life group Heartbeat International, the largest association of pro-life pregnancy centres in the world.
“This battle we face is not a battle between Republicans and the Democrats, it’s not conservatives or liberals, or left versus right”, said Sister Byrne, speaking out against abortion.
“It’s really bad because people don’t even think about it anymore, it’s become a natural thing”, she continued.
Sister Byrne called on Catholics to “fight with love” and pray for President Biden and other pro-abortion politicians and advocates “wanting to make the abortion pill over the counter so people will be able to take it like bubble gum or Tylenol”.
In the USA, abortion pills can now be dispensed remotely, allowing for DIY home abortion, a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is not the first time that Byrne spoke out in defence of pro-life issues. In August 2020, she appeared at the Republican National Convention, speaking in support of President Trump’s anti-abortion policies.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “Sister Byrne recognises the fight that pro-lifers have on their hands, in the USA and elsewhere, which transcends everyday political issues.
“A large part of that fight consists of pushing back against the normalisation of abortion, particularly DIY home abortion.
“While Catholics and other pro-lifers must be prepared to defend the unborn and the family vigorously, we must do so constructively, without hate, for the pro-life position is founded most of all on love for our fellow human beings.”
