Over 100 pro-lifers gathered at a SPUC Scotland event on 22nd May to commemorate the lives lost to abortion and to celebrate the gift of life. Michael Robinson, SPUC Director of Communications, said: “The outdoor event at Carfin Grotto allowed pro-lifers to come together in a safe and controlled environment to remember those lives lost to abortion. SPUC Scotland would like to thank the event stewards who worked hard to ensure the safety of attendees. SPUC Scotland also thanks all those pro-life supporters in attendance for their constant support and dedication to the pro-life cause.”
The event took place at Carfin Grotto on Saturday 22nd May.
With the help of students from Taylor High School, SPUC Scotland created a display of 14,000 flower images at the Grotto, one for every child lost to abortion in Scotland in just one year. Pro-lifers were encouraged to sponsor a flower to remember one of these unborn children.
Father Grant, Carfin Grotto’s Parish priest, addressed those in attendance. He said: “The first words I want to say, is how I wish this event was not taking place. I wish there was no need for what we are here to do this afternoon. This is a sad but a poignant afternoon. SPUC Scotland is marking the 14,000 babies lost to abortion in Scotland each year. As you see they have laid this carpet of white flowers in Carfin Grotto, each flower representing a baby whose life was taken whilst still in their mother’s womb.”
Bishop Toal blessed the physical display of white flowers.
“Each abortion is a tragedy”
Bishop Toal said: “SPUC Scotland have created this symbolic carpet of White Flowers here in this sacred space to mark and to pray for the souls of the nearly 14,000 babies aborted in Scotland during the last year.
“A visual representation helps in some way to bring the scale of the tragedy home to our senses.
“Each abortion extinguishes a tiny human life, filled with potential, and each of these is a tragedy. Sadly, so often, these lost lives are overlooked and forgotten by a society that has become numb to the scale and malice of abortion.
“We want to remember each of these babies, to call to mind their lost potential, to ponder the family members, friends and colleagues that we have missed because abortion took them away. We pray that they are not forgotten but, rather, that their loss can compel us to save future victims of abortion.
“I am grateful that we have an organisation like SPUC working to inform people of this issue….”
Continue the fight against abortion
SPUC Deputy CEO, John Deighan, said: “We are delighted to hold the first event at Carfin Grotto now it has opened up again. To have the support of Father Grant and Bishop Toal is wonderful. The Knights of St Columbus have come, and all the people who are supporting the White Flower initiative remembering the unborn. It is great to have that sense of solidarity and it gives me enthusiasm to continue the fight against abortion. I’m sure SPUC will do great things with the support of so many good people.”
There is still time to sponsor a flower to remember an unborn child. You can find more information here.
