The number of women choosing to end the lives of their unborn children has surged since abortion was forced on Northern Ireland by Westminster.
Although the most extreme aspects of Northern Ireland’s abortion legislation have not yet been fully implemented, the Department of Health in the Province has received (as of 11 June) 1,624 alerts of abortions taking place since new legislation was imposed last year.
The Abortion (Northern Ireland) Regulations 2020 came into force on 31 March 2020 after abortion was inflicted on Northern Ireland by Westminster in October 2019. At that time the devolved administration was not functioning. The restoration of devolution, however, has meant that some of the most draconian and extreme provisions of the new law have not yet been implemented – a situation the London government is determined to change.
In April of this year, pro-life DUP MP Carla Lockhart slammed new regulations that give Westminster the power to radically widen access to abortion inflicting “enormous damage” on the “credibility of devolution”.
Mrs Lockhart has also condemned abortion “on behalf of the many thousands of people across Northern Ireland who take a pro-life stance… I want a society in Northern Ireland that values life, and I want to see services that will help women choose life…
“We want to see a perinatal palliative care centre, a maternal mental health unit and better childcare services, and that is my ask of this Government. Help us create a culture of choosing life, as opposed to killing an innocent little baby.”
SPUC has since launched a court challenge against the UK Government’s latest action.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “1,624 abortions (at least) in Northern Ireland is a tragic figure that underscores what is truly at stake in the Province.
“Now more than ever, those who are pro-life must take a stand against even wider access to abortion in Northern Ireland – as well as seek the repeal of Section 9 to protect the unborn.
“The commissioning of a structure that puts thousands of innocent babies to death is a travesty that cannot be allowed to continue.”
