Two hundred and twenty-eight Republican members of both the House and the Senate in the United States Congress are urging the Supreme Court to roll-back or reverse Roe vs. Wade, the ruling that enshrined the right to abortion in the country’s constitution.
The legislators have formally expressed their support for a law in the state of Mississippi that bans abortion after 15 weeks gestation. Having been thrown out by a federal appeals court, the state of Mississippi recently received permission for the case to be heard by the Supreme Court.
Republican congressmen and senators, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, argue that states should be able to determine their own abortion legislation: “The Members of Congress respectfully submit that the Court uphold Mississippi’s law as effectuating state interests.
“Mississippi’s case provides the Court [with] a chance to release its grip on abortion politics, as Congress and the States have shown that they are ready and able to address the issue in ways that reflect Americans’ varying viewpoints and are grounded in the science of fetal development and maternal health.”
In 2018, Mississippi passed the Gestational Age Act, which restricted abortions after 15 weeks gestation. This law was immediately challenged by the Jackson Women’s Health Organization - the state’s only abortion provider. After being ruled unconstitutional by two lower courts, the state’s Attorney General forwarded the case to the Supreme Court.
SPUC Comment
SPUC Director of Communications, Michael Robinson, said: “It is encouraging to see high-profile federal politicians have lent their support for Mississippi’s challenge to the Roe vs. Wade ruling, a battle which if won, would be a huge step in the right direction.
“A US study found that women living near an abortion facility are much more likely to have an abortion.
“Women considering abortion in pro-life states – states that would likely ban abortion if Roe vs. Wade is overturned – would not be so willing to kill their unborn children if they were required to travel to a pro-abortion state.
“Removing the right to abortion from the US Constitution would undoubtedly save the lives of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of babies. It would also send shockwaves through the international abortion industry and show the pro-life movement across the globe that victory is possible as long as we keep fighting and never give up.”
