Pro-life businessman “cancelled” after backing Texas abortion ban

The CEO of an American video game company has been forced to resign after publicly supporting the Texas abortion ban, which prohibits abortion after a foetal heartbeat is detected. Michael Robinson, SPUC Director of Communications, said: “It is vital that we fight to protect freedom of speech. Without it, pro-lifers will struggle to have their voices heard and face further discrimination.”

John Gibson, the leader of tech firm TripWire, wrote on Twitter that he was pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the pro-life law in Texas.

He wrote: “Proud of [the Supreme Court] affirming the Texas law banning abortion for babies with a heartbeat.

“As an entertainer, I don’t get political often. Yet with so many vocal peers on the other side of this issue, I felt it was important to go on the record as a pro-life game developer.”

Just two days after this tweet was posted, TripWire announced that Gibson had stepped down as CEO.

The statement read: “The [pro-life] comments given by John Gibson are of his own opinion, and do not reflect those of TripWire Interactive as a company.

“His comments disregarded the values of our whole team, our partners and much of our broader community.

“Our leadership team at TripWire are deeply sorry and are unified in our commitment to take swift action and to foster a more positive environment.”

Pro-abortion boycott threats

Following Gibson’s comments, some video game developers threatened to boycott TripWire over his stance on abortion.

Shipwright Studios, a developer that had previously collaborated with TripWire, replied to his tweet: “While your politics are your own, the moment you make them a matter of public discourse you entangle all of those working for and with you.”

“Blatant trampling of free speech”

SPUC’s Mr. Robinson said: “This is yet another example of ‘cancel culture’. Unfortunately, as pro-lifers, we are all especially vulnerable to this widespread form of coercion.

“In the face of such hate, discrimination and blatant tramping of free speech, it takes courage to stand up, seek a dialogue and communicate the pro-life message.

“It is striking to see people who value life continue to speak up for what is true and right.”
