A Catholic university in the United States is offering a “health” insurance plan, including abortion coverage, to its students.
St. Xavier University in Chicago, founded in 1846 by the Sisters of Mercy, is now offering abortion coverage for students through Gallagher Student Health.
Sarah Michalak, a 2019 graduate of St. Xavier's and now the Upper Midwest Regional Coordinator for Students for Life of America said: “As an alumna of St. Xavier University, I am disappointed to see they are not upholding their Catholic ideals...
“Catholic universities should be beacons of life, love and truth.”
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “Direct abortion, that is to say, abortions willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law.”
Students for Life of America says it will support St. Xavier’s pro-life group, Students for Life SXU, in opposing the plan.
Michalak said: “If the university is unaware of [their] inconsistency, we are hoping that they will correct their error immediately.”
Last year, Lubbock Christian University, Clarks Summit University and Pepperdine University dropped their affiliation with pro-abortion giant Planned Parenthood after intervention from Students for Life of America.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “It is hypocritical for Catholic organisations and institutions to participate in activities that unequivocally go against Catholic teaching – especially abortion.
“Hopefully, this ‘health’ plan is merely an oversight on the part of the university’s bosses, and abortion will be removed from the health plan as soon as they are made aware of it.
“Pregnancy does not have to be the end of an academic journey. With the right support, a woman can achieve the best for herself and her child.”
