“I just started crying”: Erica shares her traumatic abortion experience

An Australian woman, speaking under the name of Erica, has described the reality of abortion, which left her with serious questions about the experience.

Erica lives in Western Australia, where abortion is permitted up to 20 weeks.

When she became pregnant, after a casual encounter, she decided to have an abortion.

Recommended  to undergo a surgical abortion, Erica admits that: “I didn’t know what that was and he [the abortion worker] didn’t tell me anything about it on the phone.”

Surgical abortion and the experience of being at an abortion facility were something that Erica was not prepared for.

“It’s one of the most emotional things I’ve ever gone through”, said Erica. “It’s very different to how you imagine it. I don’t know if I would be able to go through it again.”

When she was ushered through the “big metal doors” into the abortion room, that was “when I started getting emotional and panicking”, Erica recalls.

“It was so overwhelming, I just started crying… [The nurse] was kind of tapping my shoulder and it honestly seemed like she was irritated.”

Erica also remembers the other women waiting for abortions.

“I could not believe they were turning these girls out so quickly – that there was not even enough space for them to have a seat and recover.”

After one abortion, a woman was returned to the waiting area. Finding no empty chairs, a nurse grabbed an office chair and sat her down opposite the other women waiting for abortions.

“We were all facing her… She looked so vulnerable”, says Erica.

“I still do feel so sad about it, and it really does change your outlook.”

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “Erica’s experience is not uncommon. Her experience of abortion was very different to the dishonest narrative advanced by the abortion industry and the media.

“The reality is that the abortion industry only really cares about how many of the unborn it can kill in a single day and how many women it can push through its doors to boost its profits.

“Women, as well as the unborn, are the victims of the pro-abortion ideology promoted throughout society.”
