Hundreds gather in Glasgow for Torchlight Procession marking the passing of 1967 Abortion Act

Hundreds of pro-lifers gathered in Glasgow city centre last night for SPUC’s Annual Torchlight Procession, commemorating the millions of lives lost to abortion since the passing of the 1967 Abortion Act.

The Torchlight Procession is a peaceful vigil organised by SPUC each year, in October, to mark the anniversary of legislation that introduced abortion in England, Scotland and Wales.

In the 54 years since the legalisation of abortion, 9,789,238 babies have been killed through abortion, in what SPUC’s Michael Robinson, Executive Director (Public Affairs and Legal Services), has slammed as “a national outrage”.

This year’s event was a fantastic success, with over 600 people attending the act of witness. The event’s organiser, Charlie McCluskey, said: “This is easily the best attended in the history of the event.”

Participants met in George Square from 6 pm and prayed the Rosary, led by Father Ryan Black. From there, a candlelit procession made its way through the heart of the city to St. Andrew’s Cathedral, where a Mass was celebrated at 7.30 pm.

The assembled pro-lifers remembered the millions of babies who have been denied their basic right to life, and the countless mothers and families who have been left wounded by abortion.

SPUC’s Mr. Robinson added: “Thank you to all those who gathered at George Square last night.

"We will not lose hope"

“On the 54th anniversary since the legalisation of abortion, it was so encouraging to see such a large turnout for our remembrance evening.

“The pro-life movement will not lose hope. Together, we will be a voice for the voiceless, and will continue to work until a culture of life is restored.”
