Last week, Pope Francis gave a blessing to two giant bells created as a rallying point for pro-lifers in Ukraine and Ecuador.
The bells, bearing the name “The Voice of the Unborn”, were conceived by the Yes to Life Foundation, a Polish pro-life organisation.
On Wednesday the 27th October 2021 , Pope Francis blessed the bells.
Before an audience of pilgrims, he said: “They are destined for Ecuador and Ukraine. For these nations and for all they are a sign of commitment in favour of the defence of human life from conception to natural death.
“May their sound announce the ‘Gospel of life’ to the world, awaken the consciences of men, and be a reminder of the unborn.”
One of the bells will be given to the St. John Paul II Shrine in Lviv, in Ukraine, while the other bell will be given to the diocese of Guayaquil in Ecuador.
The bells, made in the workshop of Jan Felczyński in the south-eastern city of Przemysl in Poland, feature a DNA chain and an ultrasound of an unborn child.
They also carry the words “Thou shalt not Kill” in Spanish and Ukrainian.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “We hope that these lovely bells bearing the pro-life message will inspire others to speak out, striking like a clapper at the heart.
“Such initiatives send a powerful message that affirms the truth about the unborn, which is that they matter, are worthy of love and have a right to life.
“While the voices of the unborn are often ignored, it is to be hoped that we, as pro-lifers, can ring the bell of truth and have it heard.”
