Police authorities in India have uncovered 11 skulls and 56 foetal bones on the grounds of a hospital accused of performing an illegal abortion on a 13-year-old girl.
Last week, a doctor and two nurses from Kadam Hospital, in the city of Arvi in India, were arrested.
The mother of a pregnant child had filed a police complaint alleging that the hospital performed an illegal abortion on her daughter following a rape.
In what is said to be a case of coercion, the girl and her family were threatened by the family of the accused rapist, who wanted the unborn baby killed.
Kadam Hospital aborted the child and failed to inform police about the circumstances.
Now, in a shocking discovery, as a result of a thorough search of the hospital, the apparent remains of other illegally aborted babies have been found, prompting an investigation into further illegal abortions.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “The discovery of foetal remains buried in secret comes as no surprise, since abortion, by definition, denies the humanity of unborn babies.
“But this is also a deeply troubling story of a young girl exploited and mistreated by a young man, including coercion too.
“This case demonstrates how, even in cases of rape, abortion may serve the criminal and do additional harm to the victim, as well as to an innocent unborn child.”
