French President Emmanuel Macron has called for the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights to include abortion.
Speaking to the European Parliament in Strasbourg yesterday, on 19 January, President Macron said:
“Twenty years after the proclamation of our Charter of Fundamental Rights, which notably enshrined the abolition of the death penalty throughout the Union, I hope that we can update this charter, notably to be more explicit on environmental protection or the recognition of the right to abortion.”
The President continued: “Let us open this debate freely with our fellow citizens of great European conscience to give new life to our set of rights that forges this Europe strong in its values, the only future of our common political project.”
His pro-abortion proposal was applauded by the Parliament.
Last year, the EU Parliament approved deeming abortion “essential healthcare”, while also redefining conscientious objection to abortion as “denial of medical care”, as reported by SPUC.
Macron’s speech followed the election, on 18 January, of the youngest-ever president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, 43. Although reportedly pro-life, Metsola, who is Maltese, has said that she will not stand in the way of the Parliament’s “unambiguous and unequivocal” pro-abortion position.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “Pro-abortion President Macron’s sickening proposal comes as no surprise, being part of the broader EU assault on the unborn, disingenuously advanced under the banner of ‘healthcare’ and ‘rights’ – all the while trampling upon the innate right to life of unborn children.
“As the EU charter says, ‘Everyone has the right to life… No one shall be condemned to the death penalty, or executed.’
“Yet, it is clear that the EU and its supporters only care about imposing an anti-life, pro-abortion ideology, on valiant pro-life nations such as Poland, rather than upholding the rules of their own Charter.
“This is, of course, a profoundly worrying moment. SPUC calls on all European leaders, including Roberta Metsola, to search their conscience and uphold the human rights of unborn babies, most especially their right to life.”
