A “Sex Week” event endorsed by several departments at Ohio State University is thanking abortion providers who advocates say “deserve appreciation”. The scheme has been dubbed “Valentine’s for Abortion Providers”. Students have been invited to post thank you cards to abortion providers.
Students at Ohio State University are being encouraged to “help thank abortion providers” as part of a scheme hosted by Student Advocates for Sexual Health Awareness, in part funded by the University’s Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, as well as the College of Social Work.
One advertisement for a Sex Week event reads: “Help thank abortion providers in Ohio and Texas for the valuable work they do for reproductive rights!”
Sky Hart, president of Student Advocates for Sexual Health Awareness, said that abortion providers “deserve appreciation”.
But Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life, has called out the event and its sponsors, who are doing a “disservice to students”.
She continued: “Almost always ignored by these sponsors is the fact that you can’t protect emotionally vulnerable students from a broken heart when they follow the false pitch that all consequences — babies included — can be ignored.”
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “Nothing is loving about the abortion industry, which sponsors of ‘Sex Week’, a gross parody of the true meaning of love and fidelity, fail to understand.
“Far from serving women, abortion enables a disgusting culture that sees many young women used by selfish men for pleasure and then discarded, having taken advantage of the worst instincts, fears and vulnerabilities of everyone involved.
“This event underscores the vital need for pushback on campuses from pro-life advocates, societies and students, whose voices must be protected often in the face of shocking abuse and harassment.
“SPUC is currently running a petition calling on the UK Government to uphold freedom of speech for pro-life students. Please join us to help brave young students who are the future of our movement.”
