Pro-life triumph: NFL player’s team wins Super Bowl after mother refused to abort him 24 years ago

Marquise Copeland, an American football player for the Los Angeles Rams, was almost aborted 24 years ago. Last night, his team won Super Bowl LVI, the definitive sports event in the United States.

Copeland is a defensive lineman for the LA Rams, who won this year’s Super Bowl, beating the Cincinnati Bengals by 23 to 20.

Reaching the Superbowl is a great achievement, which, for Copeland, almost didn’t happen.

Marquise’s mother, Tenisha, almost aborted him 24 years ago after family and friends pressured her to get an abortion. Such was the stress at the time, Tenisha had to be hospitalised.

Refusing to abort her son, Tenisha eventually found herself in the care of Open Door, a maternity home in Ohio, where Marquise was born in the loving environment of a Christian ministry supporting mothers and their children.

Years later, after attending university and participating in college football, Marquise had a trial with the LA Rams. He was accepted. This season, he helped his team reach the Super Bowl through a key field interception.

Last night, Tenisha cheered on her son’s team to victory.

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “Just as Marquise fought for his place and his team, his mother, Tenisha, fought for him when he needed it most. Without her fighting spirit, Marquise – and perhaps even the LA Rams – would not have reached the Super Bowl last night and triumphed.

“In this sense, Super Bowl LVI was a triumph for pro-life values too.

“Mothers must, of course, be supported and not pressured into abortion. Pro-life advocacy and other pro-mother initiatives are so vital in saving lives and ensuring precious futures, as we have seen with Marquise.

“Marquise has a bright future ahead of him – indeed, that future is now. We must ensure that other lives are similarly protected, for the good of all, right now and without exception.”
