Heartbreaking footage from eastern Ukraine has shown brave doctors and nurses of Dnipro Children’s Hospital moving ICU newborn babies into a makeshift bomb shelter to protect them from harm amid the ongoing war with Russia.
Video shows dozens of Ukrainian infants receiving critical intensive care from hospital staff inside a makeshift bomb shelter.
These tiny patients of Dnipro are in an area of the country that Russia has been targeting with missiles.
The newborns were moved from the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, so are incredibly vulnerable even under normal circumstances.
Now, they have been forced to seek refuge in a basement area of the building to gain some protection from potential missile strikes.
The nurses can be seen doing their best to hook them up to oxygen tanks and other medical devices. Oxygen is also now said to be in limited supply in Ukraine.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “These heroic medics are a credit to their profession. Having the foresight to move these extremely vulnerable babies to an underground location will hopefully keep them out of harm’s way.
“Any conflict is a tragedy, and the loss of life is not limited to fighting soldiers, but also affects the innocent women and babies that are caught up in the conflict.
“These brave babies are now fighting for their lives in more ways than one. SPUC wishes them the best of luck. We pray for a swift return to peace in the region.”
