Virgin Radio DJ Kate Lawler has revealed that she had a secret abortion five years ago because the thought of having a baby made her “feel physically sick”. The DJ sought to preserve her own “mental health”.
Although Kate Lawler now has a daughter – Noa, born last year – she had wanted to remain childless. In 2017, she aborted a child. Ms Lawler was 37 at the time.
Ms Lawler says that, in 2017, she wasn’t ready for motherhood. “At 37, I’m never going to have a kid if I’m not ready now”, she thought. Ms Lawler was also worried that her partner would break up with her as he, too, would think, “If it’s not now, then when is it?”
Looking back on the abortion, Ms Lawler says she now feels guilty, especially “when you know that some of your best friends are on fertility journeys”.
She also often thinks “about what that little embryo might have become. Would it have been a boy or a girl? I try not to think about it, as it makes me sad.”
But despite trying not to think about her first child, Ms Lawler admits that “now that I’ve had Noa… I don’t know if I could do it [have an abortion]”.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “It is an indictment of our society that mothers like Kate Lawler turn to abortion because they don’t feel ready to be mothers.
“Abortion and its culture of anxiety have much to answer for in this regard, being part of a broader anti-motherhood ethic that plays on the understandable fears felt by many expectant mothers.
“As Ms Lawler admits, having a beautiful daughter has now radically changed her perspective. Women and their babies deserve better than abortion.
“SPUC hopes that Ms Lawler, as well as society in general, will have the courage to face up to the reality of abortion and choose life for their sons and daughters.”
