SPUC slammed Scottish abortion figures, released today by Public Health Scotland, as a “national tragedy”. 13,758 abortions were recorded in Scotland in 2021.
SPUC’s Michael Robinson, Executive Director (Public Affairs and Legal Services) said: “We are looking at a national tragedy here. This appalling figure shows us that abortion is becoming more and more normalised. Propaganda telling women that abortion is ‘simple and safe’, coupled with easier access to abortion drugs, is driving up abortion numbers.”
The breakdown
Scotland’s 2021 abortions statistics reveal that:
- 99% (13,676) of unborn babies were killed by chemical abortions, where the mother takes abortion drugs.
- Of these chemical abortions, 53% (7,310) were chemical abortions, with abortion drugs self-administered at home.
- 11,598 unborn babies were killed by abortion at under nine weeks’ gestation. This may be the impact of the DIY abortion policy, in which abortion pills must be taken under ten weeks.
- 184 unborn babies were killed by abortion following diagnosis of a suspected disability.
- 127 unborn babies were killed in late-term abortions past 18 weeks’ gestation.
- Women from Scotland’s most deprived areas were twice as likely to have an abortion compared to women from Scotland’s least deprived areas.
SPUC’s Michael Robinson added: “Behind each of these figures lies a dead baby and a mother who lost her child to abortion.”
Disturbing government measures
Earlier this month, Women’s Health Minister Maree Todd announced that the DIY home abortion scheme would remain in place in Scotland, despite being introduced as a “temporary” measure. A Scottish Government safety evaluation on DIY abortion has yet to conclude. SPUC has pointed out that in both England and Wales, as well as Scotland, the safety of mothers has been ignored in favour of an agenda seeking to “normalise” abortion.
Last year, a “devastating” survey revealed that over 10,000 women who took DIY abortion pills in the UK required hospital treatment in 2020 alone.
SPUC’s Mr Robinson said: “Scotland’s abortion figures show a devastating disregard for the lives of unborn children and the wellbeing of women. The statistics reveal a catastrophic loss of unborn life as a result of the Scottish Government’s dangerous policy on abortion.
“13,758 innocent lives have been snuffed out by Scotland’s catastrophic abortion regulations. These unborn children were unique and precious human lives with a lifetime of potential ahead of them. Their inherent right to life was snatched away by abortion.
“We will not forget them.”
