“It’s not the baby’s fault" if they were conceived in rape, says midwife

An Australian midwife has defended the right to life of unborn babies who were conceived in rape.

The woman was approached by a camera crew in Melbourne city centre and asked to share her views on abortion, including her thoughts on abortion in instances where the child was conceived during rape.

The midwife asserted that “it’s not the baby’s fault” how they were conceived, and that it would be wrong to end their lives.

She continued: “My mum was telling me about a family friend who had that situation happen and the baby was so loved and supported into the family.

“It's not the baby's fault. Why can't we turn a good thing out of a bad thing?”

She went on to discuss her experience working in midwifery in Australia, and the chilling reality of late term abortions occurring in hospitals.

She said: “I have been a midwife for a very long while. I’ve had a woman who was terminating a 20-something weeker and in the next room there’s a woman trying to save her 20 something week twins.

“And I’m like, you’re trying to get doctors to kill your baby, here’s a woman trying to hold onto her twins. At what point is that acceptable?”

Abortion regulations in Australia vary between its territories. Australia does not conduct national data collection on abortion, meaning it is challenging to accurately establish the number of unborn children who lose their lives to abortion each year in the country.

SPUC comment

An SPUC spokesperson said:

“This midwife acknowledges that it is simply barbaric to punish an innocent child for someone else’s crime. Justice dictates that in a civilised society, we punish rapists, not babies.

“Rape is a wicked and violent act, one of the very worst things a human being can do to another. Abortion is also an act of violence. Rape and abortion share this in common; they are both acts of violence against an innocent victim.

“Those who have been the victims of rape, must be treated with compassion, dignity, and receive the support and assistance needed. The pattern of violence must not be extended.”
