Leaked Government DIY abortion memo “overlooks” reality of abortion coercion in the home

A leaked Government memo calling on the abortion industry to restrict the use of DIY home abortion drugs to the homes of women “disregards the risk to vulnerable mothers from abortion coercion in the home”, SPUC has commented. “It is hardly a ‘safeguard’ when 15% of British women report being coerced into abortions.”

A Government email sent to abortion providers has said “that addresses such as hotels or family/friends of non-residents are not classed as ‘homes’ and abortion drugs (whether first or second) must not be provided to these places under any circumstances, including in-person collection taken away for use at a non-resident address”.

The message, issued by the Department of Health and Social Care, added that “it is essential that procedures and safeguards are in place to prevent this happening to ensure full compliance with the provisions of the 1967 Abortion Act. Please cascade this information to your staff.”

Jonathan Lord, co-chair of the pro-abortion British Society of Abortion Care Providers, complained that such an “interpretation” of abortion law will mean “that women who are in an abusive relationship and seek sanctuary from a violent partner in a refuge could be denied safe, effective abortion care”.

Women betrayed by abortion ideology

SPUC’s Michael Robinson, Executive Director (Public Affairs and Legal Services), has slammed Dr Lord’s refusal to admit that “many women stuck at home with an abusive partner may actually be coerced into abortion at home, which the Government memo also fails to recognise, and is consequently useless and even dangerous to mothers and their unborn children”.

“In such cases”, Mr Robinson continued, “women will have no choice but to return home to an abusive partner and accordingly be pressured or forced to take the abortion pills. The stark reality, which the Government continues to overlook, is that, for many women who want to keep their babies, the ‘home’ is far from a safe environment. This measure may aid abusers by forcing women to return home to them with the means of abortion.

“Meanwhile, the abortion industry continues to pretend abortion coercion does not exist – despite a recent BBC poll finding that 15% of British women have experienced pressure or coercion to have an abortion that they did not want. If Mr Lord and other pro-abortion ideologues really care about women, they would take this shocking reality into account and not betray the victims of domestic abuse and coercion.

“While the Government may, indeed, seek to provide safeguards for women, this measure and DIY home abortion in general ultimately make women less safe.”

Abortion coercion, the horrific reality

“Behind abortion is a big business run by men who make women believe that they’re fighting for their rights, when what they’re doing is harming their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health”, Amada Rose Pérez, a victim of abortion coercion, recently affirmed.

This year, SPUC has been highlighting the horrific reality of abortion coercion. As Dr Greg Pike, of the Bios Centre, recently pointed out at a SPUC conference in London, pro-abortion media and academics have been “enormously downplaying” abortion coercion because it does not suit their supposedly pro-woman narrative.

SPUC has reported on numerous instances of abortion coercion, including a Home Office civil servant who spiked his mistress’s drink with an abortion drug. While MPs ultimately voted in favour of making DIY abortion permanent, 70% of respondents to a Government consultation on the issue said that it should end immediately, with 69% of respondents citing safety concerns for women as the chief reason.
